hi, i'm von. it's nice to meet you.
i’m a seasoned writer, educator, facilitator, community organizer, and coffee shop enjoyer. i’m also a budding ceramics artist, making my home at the claymakers community studio in durham, north carolina. i am inspired by the art of duality. all of the ways in which we can exist simultaneously in both opposite and complementary ways. i live for the “&” of it all.my written works explore the intersections of queer masculinity and asian diasporic identity, often through deep connections with the sea. i center themes of surrealism, transsexuality, existentialism, and ancestry. i hope to tell stories that illuminate the horrors, allowing us to find the light within them.i was raised on the barrier islands of the outer banks, where i find deep connection with my islander heritage. i attended east carolina university and the university of north carolina at wilmington, where i received my master of arts in sociology. my research explores the social construction of community, the nuances of marginality, and how we are all capable of unspeakable harm and profound healing. i bring a strong abolitionist framework to every project, as it is the cornerstone of my values and scholarship.in my down time, you can almost always find me at a local coffee spot, chasing the sunrise on the atlantic, at a fall out boy concert, or searching for fireflies.
